About Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a physiological dysregulation associated with the aging of the eye, resulting in a gradual deterioration of the ability to focus clearly on nearby objects.

Also known as age-related farsightedness, it affects most adults over the age of 40. A common sign of presbyopia is difficulty reading small print, resulting in the need to hold reading material at a distance. Other symptoms include headaches and eye strain. The degree of the problem varies from person to person.

Along with presbyopia, other types of refractive error may be present. This condition is similar to farsightedness or hyperopia, which begins in childhood and presents similar symptoms of blurred vision of objects nearby.

Presbyopia is a typical age-related phenomenon.

It occurs as a result of age-related changes in the lens (decreased elasticity and increased stiffness) and ciliary muscle (decreased strength and ability to move the lens), which causes the right back of the eye to come into focus instead of the retina when looking at near objects.
