Thanksgiving Day
Origin of "Thanksgiving":
It is commonly believed that Thanksgiving Day commemorates the first harvest of the Pilgrim Fathers, who migrated from England to the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts.
The winter of 1621, when the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth, was very severe and resulted in many deaths, but they survived with the help of the Wampanoag Indians who lived nearby. The following fall, 1621, was particularly fruitful, and the Pilgrim Fathers invited the Wampanoag to join them for a feast in thanksgiving for God's blessings.
However, both the English settlers and the Wampanoag had a tradition of celebrating the fall harvest, and this year's event was not specifically positioned as a thanksgiving.
The first Thanksgiving celebrated in the Plymouth Colony, in 1623, was more of a religious occasion of worship and giving thanks to God in church rather than a dinner party.
